Giving A Healthy Gift Basket

June 8th, 2010

Nowadays, everyone is very aware of the benefits of eating properly and the consequences of excess. This is one of the reasons why a healthy gift basket is a great idea for a present. Going ‘healthy’ does not mean that the gift basket cannot be fun, personal and good-looking. If your loved one likes nuts, then buy nuts, but unsalted ones in their shells. You see? It only takes a little lateral thinking.

Children may seem hard to please on the topic of healthy gift baskets, because children love sweets and sugar, but there are many healthy snacks, which have a little less sugar. For instance, jam-filled biscuits contain sugar, but they also contain fruit. The same goes for oatmeal raisin cookies.

Put in a few energy bars from the health food shop made from grains, fruit, honey, raisins and nuts and you may not have cut down on the calories, but you have increased the goodness of the foodstuff. An unusual fruit from the Indian Supermarket, like a passion fruit, a star fruit or a papaya might go down well too and impart extra vitamins.

If you are facing giving a healthy gift basket to a teenager, you may do well to remember that teens worry about their appearance. The get bad skin and spots. So you could prepare a healthy gift basket which included fresh fruit, pimple cream and skin cleanser with rose-scented bath bags for girls, and shaving kits for boys (or vice versa).

If you are giving a healthy gift basket to an elderly person, then bear in mind that many older people frequently put up with dietary problems and aches and pains, so the older you get, the more you value healthy treats. Gourmet chocolate, fine quality drinking chocolate, bath salts and peppermints would definitely be appreciated. Single leaf tea is also an idea, say, Lapsong Suchong.

If you are thinking about giving a healthy gift basket to your parents, why not? Mum may well appreciate a selection of anti-wrinkle skin creams, cocoa butter or glycerin soap and bath salts. Many shops supply oils beneficial to mature skin. Gourmet chocolate will also be esteemed as will rarer nuts and fruits. Rose water is a good addition too.

And Dad? Well, you know him best. Is he sporty and health orientated or is he into work and recreation? Does he like fishing or golf? Does he enjoy bar-b-queing? Does he like expensive, single malt whisky – the non-guzzling kind? Does he like the occasional beer? If so, you could get him a few foreign beers that he has never tried before. Chocolate liqueurs are usually a firm favourite as well. Stem ginger is a well-liked luxury with those men who are aware of its existence.

Perhaps a few magazines on his favourite subject (no, not Penthouse) or a couple of tickets to a game. A joint basket for Mum and Dad is probably easier and then you can send them to the theatre or/and a restaurant too. A healthy one, of course.

A Devotion To Chocolate For The Connoisseur

June 3rd, 2010

I have a few questions for you first of all. Do you like chocolate? Or does it go deeper than that? Do you love chocolate are you what is called a chocoholic? And lastly, was that attitude formed by store-bought chocolate such as Mars Bars, Galaxy and Snickers?

I posed all those questions because, if you love chocolate and all you have ever eaten is store-bought chocolate, you have a real surprise waiting for you one day. A thoroughly pleasant surprise. One day you will taste gourmet chocolate and it will bowl you over. It will make you lament all those days of your life that you had not known it.

Gourmet chocolate is to a Mars Bar what fillet mignon is to a ham sandwich or what champagne is to cheap plonk. It sounds as if I am running Mars Bars down and I suppose I am in a way, but I do believe that they have their place in the hierarchy of the realm of chocolate, it is just not near the top and when you have tried gourmet chocolate, you will agree with me.

You will see the light and realize that maybe you used to eat store chocolate for the sugar rush and not for the chocolate, because the store variety is actually a very watered down version of the real thing. If you do not believe me, look at the contents list on the back of the wrapper.

Dark chocolate is created by adding fat and sugar to the cacao mixture. The U.S. Government calls this “sweet chocolate”, and requires a 15% concentration of chocolate liquor. European rules stipulate a minimum of 35% cocoa solids. It does not sound very much, does it? (By the way, chocolate liquor is like lumpy gravy and if you pulverize the lumps and remove most of the fat, you get cocoa solids).

This is why European chocolate has a better name than American chocolate in general, although there are excellent gourmet chocolate manufacturers in the USA (called chocolatiers; like a chef is to haute cuisine)..

Some inexpensive chocolates are even blended with wax and most bakery chocolate products have very little, if any, real chocolate in them! They contain mostly sugar of one kind or another and “partially hydrogenated palm oil.” On the other hand, gourmet chocolate will echo the quality of the ingredients, which includes high quality cocoa beans, no preserving agents or vegetable fats (other than cocoa butter) and sugar, which is also a preserving agent, should only be used in moderation.

Some chocolate is made from only one variety of bean, just like some wine is made from one variety of gape and some whisky is single malt, but most is made from a blend of several kinds of beans again lust like the cheaper wines and whiskeys. Fine chocolate has a far greater percentage of cocoa butter, and will be more highly refined.

Aficionados of gourmet chocolate are like connoisseurs of fine wines and single malt whiskies, they appreciate the object of their affection. In time, they can discuss the advantages of one bean or process over another. If you want to go down this route, you could join one of the many good gourmet chocolate clubs on the Internet

Buying Perfume For Yourself

May 28th, 2010

Most people use of one kind or another, whether its purpose is to cover up potential body odour or just for fun. When I say ‘fun’, I mean ‘pleasure’ or to attract admirers, whether you aim to do anything about them or not. There are literally thousands of perfumes to choose from and they are priced from cheap to exorbitantly expensive. So, when there are so many choices, how do you know which ones are suitable for you?

There are a few rules of thumb that you can use as guiding principles to help you choose which scent is appropriate for you. First of all, you will have to know a little about the basic varieties of scent available, before you can find out which type of perfume will suit you the most.

So, you can start by taking a look at the ingredients on the bottle. From these ingredients you can determine what type of scent is in the bottle. The basic varieties of scent are: light musk, natural scent, loud heady scent, floral fragrance, warm scent, bright cheerful scent and a few others.

You should get a small note book and make notes when you trial perfumes in various department stores. Perhaps you will find musk too overwhelming for you or perhaps you do not want to smell like a garden flower. It is all very individual and personal. No one can say that you are right or wrong.

One’s body chemistry plays a huge part in why a perfume will smell lovely on your friend, but not so well on you. It is just a fact, that you cannot go by what smells good on someone else.

Scents that are manufactured from natural substances such as flowers, herbs or spices and even fruit tend to smell warm and soft. Examples of this type or fragrance are rose and lily of the valley. Musk, however, may be made to produce a delicate fragrance that lingers softly around you, but it can be strong and heady too.

You may discover that you like a scent, but that it is just too overpowering for you. If that is the situation, you may be able to get it in Eau de Cologne or Toilet Water, which are weaker in dilution. Other than that, you could use less or dab it on the underside of your clothing where it might not be subject to so much body heat and so will not disperse quite so quickly.

If you go about choosing the right for yourself systematically, it could take quite some time to find something that is ‘Essence De You’, but it is well worth it. What is a year, when you can wear the perfume for forty years? This is why I suggested getting a little note pad to put in your bag before doing the rounds of the free trial counters in the department stores.

The salesgirls won’t mind, they will be pleased to show off their knowledge and be pleased that someone is taking a real interest in their merchandise. Then, once you have one, you could begin all over again, if you enjoyed finding the first perfume, but next time you will have a notebook full of pointers.

The Wedding Ring

April 16th, 2010

One’s wedding ring is often a person’s most essential item of jewellery, because of the huge significance that it has for its wearer. It is intended to denote the love that exists between two people. In most countries, the wedding ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand – the ring finger, although in Norway, Germany and Russia, it is worn on the fourth finger of the right hand.

It is generally a good idea to have your finger measured by an expert, before buying an expensive ring, because fingers swell and shrink over the course of a life span and a good jeweller will know how much slack to allow. If the change in the size of your finger is likely to be lasting, it is a good idea to have the ring resized, this is so that it will neither cut into you nor fall off your finger easily.

These days a lot of couples like to go shopping for wedding rings together, because they want to get a pair of identical rings that both of them likes. However, it does not have to be like that. In fact it never was, because the man bought the ring for his fiancee as a surprise. So, if you do not share the same tastes, do not worry about it.

There are hundreds of styles to choose from and several kinds and qualities of metal too. Yellow gold is still the most popular, but there is white gold and specialist golds too like Welsh gold, which is very rare. Besides gold, platinum and titanium are very popular too.

A fast developing trend is for a couple to design or have designed a unique pair of wedding rings. At first, you would think that this would be very expensive, but it is not inevitably so. If you keep your design modest and the stones, if any, equally so, then the rings might only cost 10%-20% more than those off the shelf.

Gold is still the most prevalent metal for a wedding ring, but silver is starting to gain ground too, although it was always looked on as the poor cousin before. Likewise, diamonds are the still the number one stone of choice, but sapphires are also very popular nowadays. Or you could go for plain bands with something like a Celtic knot design.

Shopping for wedding rings can be fun, but it is easy to go over the top and spend much more than you planned to. You could decide how much you can afford and stick to it, not that that always works either. Count on to pay a lot more for the bride’s wedding ring than the groom’s. This is because the bride’s ring usually contains diamonds, whereas the groom’s is often a plain band of gold.

You could further personalize your wedding rings with an inscription and a date. Personalized, or unique wedding rings often get handed down through the generations. Possibly, yours will too. Or, if you want to wear your grandmother’s handed-down ring, you could personalize it in some way, so that it is both old and yet something of you as well.

Wedding Dresses

April 15th, 2010

The wedding dress is just about the most important item in the wedding ceremony apart from the vows and the rings. The bride wants to look her best and the groom wants to look his best too. A gorgeous wedding dress will help the bride’s dream to look stunning come true.

Therefore, it is imperative to select the wedding dress with care, as every bride knows. However, there are a few items that are not as clear as the wedding dress just looking stunning and we will list the most significant of these below.

Besides individual taste in fashion, the most important consideration has to be the time of the year. Which season are you going to get married in? What temperature is it likely to be? Could it rain? If it is likely to be cold, you ought to wear a heavier cloth than if it is likely to be hot. You might also permit the season to have an influence on the colours you wear, but that is a matter of personal taste. For example, winter colours might be slightly darker than summer colours.

Another vital aspect when choosing the colour of the wedding dress is the skin colouration of the bride. This matter is also true of the accessories. The bride will also need a head-dress, a veil, gloves and a bouquet, all of which should compliment the wedding dress and the bride’s hair and skin colouration.

Try to get a wedding dress that fits perfectly. This sounds obvious, but it is easy to think that you can make minor changes yourself later on. However, making changes is not as easy as it sounds and you could end up making matters worse rather than better. In any case, you do not want to be worrying that a stitch you made will break or come undone at the wrong moment. It is far better to get a good fitting wedding dress than to get the exact colour that you want.

It is imperative to bear in mind the quality of the image of the wedding dress, if you are buying or hiring from a catalogue or website. You also should leave plenty of time to be able to return the dress if need be. The fact is that photographs are not always true to life and packers do make mistakes, so if your selection is not what you expected, when it arrives, you will need to have a couple of weeks to return it and obtain a new one. Allow at least three weeks for the exchange; longer if possible.

White has always been the most popular colour for first time brides, but it is not a rule. Off-white or pastel shades look very good too and they will set you apart from the norm. Apple white or blush pink are very effective colours for a wedding dress, but as I said before, everything should be colour co-ordinated with the colour of the bride’s skin and hair and the bouquet, if you are dead set on carrying a certain bouquet of flowers, like, say, gardenias.

Saving Money In The Holiday Sales

March 21st, 2010

Everyone loves to take advantage of the reduced prices during the holiday sales. In fact, the best day to go looking for special offers is the day after the actual holiday finishes.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and it is the busiest shopping day of the year. You will get huge savings, but you will need to get up early, be prepared to queue and jostle.

Another example is jewellery and St Valentine?s Day. Many men buy their wives or girlfriends jewellery during this period as a St Valentine?s Day present. However, in the weeks after St Valentine?s Day, you can save a minimum of 30% on the very same pieces of jewellery that were on sale a week before. This is a clear sign that we are being hood-winked on these holiday occasions and that we ought to wait until the actual holiday is over.

OK, it may not seem so romantic to wait, but it must be preferable to be able to get 30% more gold for your money or to give the same gift, but be able to go for a meal too. If I were a woman, I know which alternative I would choose!

Or, instead of a nice silver or gold ring, you would be able to pay for gold instead of silver or white gold instead of yellow. You could get a exquisite Celtic knot or a Claddagh ring instead of a plain band.

Striking Easter outfits are also expensive before Easter. However, why not buy the items you want after Easter and either make use of them next year or use them for parties, exceptional occasions or church? You can save a bundle of money in this way, just by using a little forward planning.

In order to help cut down on how much money you spend on Christmas gifts, why not try buying them all year long as and when you find something nice in the sales? How many times have you come across something in a sale and said to yourself: ‘that would be the perfect gift for so-and-so’? It is better to take advantage of these opportunities and keep the items aside for when the right event comes up.

Then there are those post Christmas sales as well. The Boxing Day sales are a great opportunity to pick up items that you can give as gifts later in the year. And why not buy something for yourself too while you are at it? You can save a lot on your favourite perfumes. Buy enough to last you the rest of the year!

You can make your funds go a lot further if you take advantage of the post holiday sales. Rely on serendipity. Buy opportunistically and you will not only save yourself a lot of money, but you will never be stuck for a present at the last minute either.

Celtic Weddings

March 14th, 2010

Celtic wedding are an ideal way of showing your being a Celt. It is also a way of incorporating traditional values, symbols, themes and customs into major events in your life. However, Celtic wedding are hugely popular not only among people with a Celtic tradition, but among other couples who are taken by the ancient Celtic culture.

Celtic wedding have traditional symbolic motifs, often based on the Celtic knot. Welsh, Irish and Scottish families will sometimes marry in ancient buildings like castles or old manors, but that is not the standard. A traditional Celtic wedding is not greatly different from a normal British wedding in a lot of ways.

However, the number of similarities between Celtic wedding ceremony traditions and normal British-style weddings goes a lot further than that. If you want a traditional British style wedding, you will be going unwittingly for a Celtic wedding. But you can beef up the Celtic element of the wedding ritual even further without sinking into silly theatrics.

This is a traditional Celtic poem about when to marry:

Marry when the year is new, Always loving, kind and true.

When February birds do mate, You may wed, nor dread your fate.

If you wed when March winds blow, Joy and sorrow both you’ll know.

Marry in April when you can, Joy for maiden and for man.

Marry in the month of May, You will surely rue the day.

Marry when June roses blow, Over land and sea you’ll go.

They who in July do wed, Must labour always for their bread.

Whoever wed in August be, Many a change are sure to see.

Marry in September’s shine, Your living will be rich and fine.

If in October you do marry, Love will come but riches tarry.

If you wed in bleak November, Only joy will come, remember.

When December’s showers fall fast, Marry and true love will last.

Here are a few other traditions:

Loving Cup: The traditional cup is a two-handled bowl with Celtic designs etched onto it. The idea of the Loving Cup ceremony is for the bride and groom to share their first drink together as husband and wife and to show the coming together of their two families.

The Bell of Truce: A bell is blessed and then presented to the bride and groom. The couple is required to ring the bell, while thinking tender thoughts of each other. The bell is then kept at home as a token of the wedding day. If an argument arises, the bell can be rung by either the husband or wife to call a truce. The tinkling sound is meant to remind the couple of their wedding vows and to help them recall happy memories from their wedding day.

Handfasting: Early Celts used to ?tie the knot?. It originates from a pre-Christian custom of literally tying a couple’s wrists together in a kind of probationary marriage lasting a year and a day, at the end of which a new covenant was made or the couple parted ways.

Bride’s Bouquet: In Celtic wedding traditions brides carried herbs beneath their veils to signify fidelity, and spices to frighten off evil spirits.

Ring finger: Ancient Celts thought that there was a vein in the third finger of the left hand that ran directly to the heart, so ring placed on that finger demonstrated a strong love and vow to the other.

Wedding cake: A thin loaf was broken over the bride’s head at the end of the service to indicate fertility. The wheat from which it was made symbolized fertility and the guests enthusiastically picked up the pieces for good luck charms.

It was also common for the Celtic groom to toss a handful of coins into the crowd after the wedding, in the hope that this would bring them luck in the years ahead.

Wedding Gift Ideas

March 8th, 2010

The occasion of a wedding is a very special day for everyone. Just being asked to one can cause real exhilaration. It is always a delight to see someone walk down the aisle with the promise of true love and life long joy. Picking out a wedding gift can be a lot of fun too. There are thousands of gifts that you can buy online or in retail stores.

Personalized gifts is a common trend in weddings presents. Bespoke gifts bring out your creativity because you can determine the style, design and message you want to be printed on them. Products range from photo frames, mugs and clocks, among many others.

When buying presents, always keep in mind your budget but be sure to get the look you want on the goods you buy. Here are some gift ideas that would definitely be a hit:

Tapestry – It is lovely to remember the wedding day, but how best to do this? Personalize everyday belongings by printing the couple’s picture on them. You can have it printed on pillows, blankets or bags.

Have them printed on a tapestry wall hanging and they can be kept as heirlooms. Different coloured cotton threads can make your pictures come to life just like the photograph itself.

Photo Frames – Keep your best pictures in exclusive photo frames. You can add romantic messages like ‘lovers forever” or “ideal couple”. Romantic lines from songs or poems are recommended too. You can choose from the different frames obtainable like natural wood, quality resin, or metal steel.

Personal messages are mostly engraved by laser or cut out of wood. The couple would love putting there favorite wedding photos in such frames to remind them of the happiness of their auspicious day.

T-shirts – Show your own personality and feelings by having them printed on comfortable tees. Many couples would love to demonstrate their love for each other on cute shirts. The most widespread of the slogans on these shirts is the letter “I” followed by a big red heart and then name of the groom or bride.

You could tell the world how you feel towards a person with such a personalized tee. If you want to be more intimate, you could even print romantic messages on lingerie or underwear.

Accessories – Women love accessories. Bracelets are perfect items for personalization. You could choose sterling silver or even 9 carat – 22 carat gold. This depends on your finances, of course. But remember, it is the thought that counts.

Common themes that are put on bracelets are the date of your wedding or your anniversary or the couple’s name. You can personalize rings and necklaces in the same way too.

Tankards – Tankards are very useful. If you are giving a present to the groom, customizing his beer mug or wine glass would surely be appreciated. Choose a beer mug that is not embarrassing. Pewter or glass look nice and the personal message would stand out clearly.

Clocks – You could purchase a wall clock or personal watches. Either way, you can be certain that the recipient would find them very useful. Engraving one’s name on a metal steel sports watch is an eye catcher too. A pocket watch would be just as appreciated.

Looking for wedding gifts can be very enjoyable. Personalizing your gifts would add a special touch to each present. No matter the value of the gift, remember that it is always the thought that matters most.

Choosing Scent For Somebody

February 27th, 2010

A person’s scent is a unique way of expressing oneself. Some people choose the perfume they wear depending on their frame of mind, some wear one perfume during the day and another in the evening, while many people choose to wear the same perfume all the time. Others have a favourite, very expensive scent that they wear only on special occasions.

Whatever someone does, the choice is a personal one. Some people use a perfume like a personal brand, so that whenever you get a whiff of that particular bouquet, you instinctively think of that one person. My mother used a scent called ‘Wild Gorse’ made by the monks on Caldy Island in west Wales for this purpose. Very, very few other people had that scent, as you had to go to the island to obtain it.

It is almost impossible to choose perfume for someone you do not know, unless you go for a famous, expensive name like Chanel No. 5. There are few women who would turn down a bottle of that, even if it was not their favourite perfume. The more you know the person the easier it should get, in theory at least.

So, how do you know which perfumes are going to be a welcome gift? That is the $65k question. There are several ways that reduce the odds of you making a slip-up. You could take a sneak look on their dressing table to see what that person wears already.

If you plan far enough in advance, you could bring it up in conversation with an off-hand compliment like: ‘Oh, what a lovely scent/after shave! I like that. What is it called?’. But you have to do it weeks before you need the information.

Or you could choose a scent that brings a special memory to mind, like the perfume that was worn on their wedding day, anniversary, or graduation day. Perfumes like these bring back pleasant memories and make them feel good by association. If you are not a bosom buddy of the one you want to buy for, you could ask their friends’ advice.

If you want to give a gift of scent to someone that you want to remember you by, why not invite them out for a meal or a show and a meal and present the perfume in the restaurant? Most perfumes lose their effectiveness after four or five hours, which is why many women top up every now and again with a spray from their handbags. Very few men do this.

So, if you give the perfume later on in the evening, there is less chance of it clashing with what they are already wearing, meaning that someone is more likely to dab a bit on there and then, thereby associating the bouquet in their memory with the night you took them out. Just make certain it was a good night out.

If all of the above fails, then most department stores offer perfume gift boxes which include the perfume , a powder and body lotion. These perfume gift boxes are a decent option, even if the person only wears it to go to bed or around the house.
