Protecting Children With Mental Health Problems

July 28th, 2010

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves et cetera. Predators very often have mental problems that keep them from functioning correctly in normal society. Children with mental illnesses are often the prey of these predators, and sometimes children with mental disorders are the predators themselves. In fact, the creator of one of the most serious viruses online came from an eighteen-year old English boy.

Dangers mental illnesses: Not everyone with a mental disorder is a threat to society. Generally, predators with mental disorders are plagued with sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental disorders that pose threats to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that lurk on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental illness. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, since many mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children must live by and stick to the rules. Do not leave room for doubt when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental illnesses will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, et cetera. This makes it harder as a parent to protect your child. However, it is important that you enforce the laws. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these laws, since some children with dangerous problems can be violent.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring the police in and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may pay court fees and go through headaches, but I promise you it will benefit you in the end. As a mother raising two boys with dangerous mental problems, I can tell you it won’t be simple, but it can be done.

Children with mental disorders often have brilliant minds that can usually get past any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take more time than normal to monitor your child’s behaviour online. Teach your child that giving out personal information is restricted and encourage them to ask your permission when thinking about giving name, phone number or other details online.

Allow your child to take some responsibility and always encourage your child to participate in family discussions that concern them. Furthermore, encourage the child to be safety conscious by asking them to report any crime committed against them.

One of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health problems is teaching him/her to stay away from violent images and pornography. It is next to impossible to keep them clear of this trash. However, it can be done if you set a good example for the child to follow.

It is vital that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories and so forth without demeaning the child. You will be amazed at the wisdom children with some mental illnesses have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can give you for dealing with children with major mental illnesses, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For additional child safety tips for children with mental disorders seek advice from a qualified counsellor.

Remember: Children learn what they see and hear.

Calendars And How To Appreciate Them

July 26th, 2010

The calendar is such a commonplace, everyday item, but how much do you really know about the operation of it. Why is it like that?

A DAY: The Earth rotates at a reasonably fixed pace about the imaginary line running between the North and South Poles named the Earth’s Axis. The time it takes to spin once is called a ‘rotation’ and this takes just under twenty-four hours. Nevertheless, because the Earth is constantly traveling around the Sun, the exact time from noon one day to noon the next is 3 minutes 56 seconds longer and this makes a day almost exactly twenty-four hours in length.

The actual time from noon to noon differs depending where the Earth is on its celestial course around the Sun, but if you average the days in a year out, it comes to precisely twenty-four hours.

A YEAR: All nine planets in our solar system move around the Sun in approximately perfectly circular routes called orbits. Each trip around the Sun is called a revolution and all the planets orbit around the Sun in the same direction. The course the Earth takes can be verified by noting its location against the background stars.

Since you cannot see the Sun and the stars at the same time, it is obligatory to note the location of the Sun in the morning and the see which stars appear there in the night. You will see that the Sun appears to pass through the twelve constellations of the zodiac during a year.

Earth’s journey around the Sun, which seems like the Sun travelling through the zodiac takes about 365.25 days. This is different from year to year, so astronomers add or delete a second in some years to keep their time accurate with the Earth’s motion.

THE SEASONS: The seasons indicate the variation in the pattern of daylight over the course of a year. Because the Earth is tilted off centre, different parts of it get different amounts of sunlight on different stages of its path around the Sun, a path that we call a year. So, between about the 21st September and late March, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, which creates Autumn and Winter, giving less than twelve hours of daylight per day.

From April to the 20th September, the Northern Hemisphere receives more than twelve hours of daylight a day, producing Spring and Summer. The exact opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Equinoxes occur at the points in the year when there is exactly twelve hours of sunlight and darkness in the day. So, the vernal or Spring equinox is on or around the 21st March and the autumnal equinox is on or around the 21st September. Summer officially begins on the day with the greatest amount of daylight, the 21st June or summer solstice.

The winter solstice occurs on the shortest day, the 21st December. ‘Solstice’ is a combination of two words meaning ’sun standing still’ and the days are so called because they are the days when the apparent movement of the Sun reaches its limits and reverses course again.

Tips On Getting A College Cheerleading Scholarship

June 21st, 2010

A major part of a good upbringing is a decent education. Parents have different financial resources but they also have diverse ways of organizing their children’s education. Some parents are better at it than others. Likewise, not all children want to become doctors or dentists, no matter what their parents would like and most of us thank God for that. Diversity is the spice of life, because fortunately we are not all the same.

Paying for your child’s higher education is quite another thing. The costs of higher education never seem to drop , in spite of the fact that there is a depression and parents are being laid off. State funding is also in question. Therefore, there is a huge pressure on the grants that are available.

If you are short of the requisite amount of money to send your child to college or pay for it yourself, you will have to use your best gift to try to secure a grant from private industry. You alone know what you or your child is best at and the game is to take advantage of that talent in order to attract a grant.

One of the kinds of grant that is often overlooked by the academically inclined is a cheerleading grant. If you can dance, if you are out-going and if you like showing off, you might get a cheerleading grant, even if you want to study pure or applied mathematics! Tangents off this variation are scholarships for gymnastics and track events.

There are four things to think about when seeking a cheerleading grant and they can all be made to begin with the letter ‘W’, so that they are easy to remember.

First find out WHO is in charge of cheerleading in your school and if they know where you can go to find out more information. If the coach in your school is not up to speed, go higher. Go over his or her head, otherwise you may miss out. If that does not work out, ask around for big local sports teams and write to the sports club directly.

When you have the relevant information about where the clubs are, find out WHAT they require from you. A good tactic would be to look at old games and practise the moves that the cheerleaders do in those games. Once you know the cheerleading moves from previous games, you will have shown an interest in the club.

Find out whether the fund that you are applying to has restrictions on WHERE you can be educated. Will you be constrained to the USA? If you want to study English in London, that will be a difficulty

Find out WHEN the application has to be sent in by. In other words, what are the deadlines.

There is a lot to do if you want a ‘free education’ no matter which way you try to get it. The point of this piece is to make you conscious of the fact that you do not have to only go down the route of applying for academic grants or even sports grants, things like cheerleading scholarships are also out there.

Child Safety And Online Dangers

June 14th, 2010

What is there to say about the world children inhabit these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is lowering its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our kids.

What is even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to keep our children away from websites of an adult nature. Children nowadays are advanced in technology, and sometimes more so than their parents. How can we protect our children against online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while battling the corruption going on worldwide?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can guard our children by monitoring their time spent on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you use, however, I will speak only of the Internet providers I am aware of, since all programs are different. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will need to go to Safety at the Toolbar and click on Parental Controls.

Once you get there, you will see a drop-down list of available usernames. Search for your child’s username and click on the username. You will see a popup window appear. Click on ‘Edit Web Control’ and then click ‘Kids Only’, and close. Now your child is protected against websites that hold potential dangers.

Chat rooms can be serious threats to children, since anyone can go into these rooms. Often predators frequent these areas, so as to draw children into a web of danger. In the AOL browser, click on ‘Safety’ and then click on ‘Parental Controls’.

Next, following the same steps click on the ‘Edit IM Controls’, ‘Edit E-mail Controls’, and ‘Edit Chat Control’ and follow the same steps as you did to setup the ‘Parental Controls’.

It is a good idea to install passwords. Having passwords will offer additional safety to your child. However, do not give the child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might even reset the controls.

It is also a good idea to use your ‘Popup Controllers’ too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry something that will corrupt your system or popup adult content, which your child will see when online. You can go into ‘AOL Safety’ at the toolbar to set these popup controls.

If you use Internet Explorer; open a page. Click on ‘Tools’ at the top menu, then click ‘Popup Blocker’ and then click ‘Popup Blocker Settings’. Read the details carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is the norm and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium, you could find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers posed to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. As you can see, your child is at serious risk, and if you want to master safety, you have to monitor, and take the steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have met sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Additional studies show that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels each year. The studies claim that the largest group that views porn sites are children and that these children are typically between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The statistics showed that around 74% of the porn sites had unmonitored banners, while another 66% of the sites did not issue adult content warnings. Another 11% of the sites did not have sexually explicit content warnings, and 25% mousetrapped the visitors, by not allowing them to leave the sites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. Protect your child now!

Learn How To Study Correctly

May 31st, 2010

Any of you who have taken a class like anatomy, or chemistry, know how hard it is. I started taking these classes when I was an underclassmen in college. It has hard for me to balance school, with my social life, and my sport. It seemed like every other class was easy for me to study for, except for anatomy. My roommates were also in this class with me, but they all studied differently than I did. We then decided to put all of your studying techniques together to make the ultimate study plan for any challenging class.

Step One:

Find a study group. My roommates and I studied together, and it worked! If you have people to study with it will help. Using the study guide as a tool to divide up amongst your group will help a lot, encause then one person doesn’t have to spend all their time filling out the who study guide. The faster you can get the study guide done, the quicker you will be able to move onto actually learning the material.

Step Two:

Be organized. This is the most important part when trying to study for a test, especially if its classes such as anatomy or chemistry. Once you have finished the study guide and know what is on the test, organize your notes into chapter by chapter order. Separately take down and re-write the important notes. If you keep writing down the notes over and over again it will help you apply what you have learned by doing something other than looking at the paper for hours.

Third:

Study diagrams and pictures. If you are in a class teaching you about the human body it is key that you understand where certain functions are taking place. Learn the diagrams and the pictures, this way when you reach that point in your notes you will already know the anatomy of where that certain function is taking place.

Pool Safety For Kids

May 26th, 2010

Having a swimming pool in your house or garden is a fantastic way to have fun for yourself and indeed your entire family. However, in spite of that, it can also be rather dangerous to your children around. If you can, you should wait until your kids are at least five years old or more until you put a swimming pool on your property. On the other hand, if you already have a swimming pool, there are ways that you can safe-guard your family.

One thing you should always remember is to never, ever, allow your children to be alone near your pool. Children tend to be drawn to water and all it takes is a slip for them to fall into the swimming pool. If you and your children are at your pool side and you need to leave the area even for a second, you must always take your children with you.

To be completely safe, you should always make sure that you have plenty of safety equipment around your pool at all times. Safety items are essential to have around, as they could save the life of a child or anyone else who can’t swim.

You should invest in a shepherd’s hook too, as you can use it to pull someone out of the water. Having a phone at your pool is also a good investment, as you can easily ring for help in the event of an emergency.

If you don’t already have a sturdy fence around your pool, you should think about making one right away. A fence is a great way to keep children away from your swimming pool. If you have a protective fence up, you won’t have to worry about little children falling into the water, while you are away from the pool. When you put up your fence, you should always make sure that it’s at least six feet high with a locking gate. In this way, no one can get into the pool without a key, which you should keep on you always.

You could also learn CPR. Even though you may not ever have to use it. However, it is always good to know in the event of someone falling in your pool that is unable to swim. Whenever you have children or people you know can’t swim at your pool, you should always stay within reach of them, so you can react instantly if they fall in. A minute is all it takes to save someone’s life.

Always bear in mind that a swimming pool is for having fun in, although you have to always think in terms of safety first too. Once you have finished enjoying your pool for the day, ensure that you lock up the poolside well – and padlock the gate tight so no one can get in too.
