The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part One

March 12th, 2010

Much of what we know or have supposed about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, in which it is situated has been gleaned from the buildings found there, many of which have been badly neglected for too long. There are also legendary stories, such as that of Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin in Glastonbury, just across the channel and who was one of the first missionaries to this part of the country.

It is a widely-held traditional belief that the father of Caractacus took him to Rome where they both converted to Christianity. They later returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with the missionary Bran The Blessed. It is also well-known that Christianity had gained much popular belief in the Vale by the early fourth century and that several bishops on the Council of Rome were from the area.

One of the oldest shrines in the vicinity is St. Baruch’s Church on Barry Island, but it is also in very poor condition. Barry Island was one of the most important monastic retreats of the period in south Wales. Steep and Flat Holm islands in the Bristol Channel were also highly significant in this regard. Another very important part of the puzzle was St. Illtyd’s Seminary in Llantwit Major which had 2,200 students.

A castle was constructed on the site of an old Roman fort and naval shipyard, which had been on Porthkerry Point, although it protruded further out to sea then than it does now. Furthermore, many wolf and deer bones have been found between Barry and Sully, proving these animals’ existence there in vast numbers Arrowheads, flints, needles and coins show that people inhabited the area with them.

Barry Island was first called ‘Baruch’s Island’, as far as we know, after Saint Baruch. St. Baruch had been found on one of the beeches, washed up dead in 700 AD. He is known to have drowned when returning from Flat Holm, which was commonly used as a retreat by religious people over Lent.

He and Gwelches had been disciples of St. Cadoc at the time. On their return to the island, they realized that they had left their enchiridion (religious manual) behind and St. Cadoc made them go back and get it. They never returned alive. St. Baruchs most famous disciple, St. Illtyd was educated there.

Barry Island has had several names, including Island of the Saints and Insular of Peiros. St. Peiro was the leader of the seminary after St. Illtyd and the mentor of St. Samson. St. Doeninas was also a leader of another abbey near Friars Point on the island.

Wedding Favours

March 7th, 2010

There are many presents that can be given for wedding favours, after all the point of wedding favours is to show your guests that you are grateful for them coming to your wedding and expressing their support for your wedding. Therefore, you ought to really try to find wedding favors, that your guests will like.

Naturally, the gift that most appeals to your guests, may not be one you would choose for yourself, but you are buying the wedding favours for your guests, not yourself. If you think about it, you should be able to come up with something that everyone will like and that you are pleased to give. In order to help you get the task done, we will offer you a few tips below.

Love spoons are a prevalent souvenir at Welsh and other Celtic weddings. A love spoon was a wooden spoon carved by a love sick man for the woman he cherished. She would then either take or reject the love spoon, although she was not bound by the acceptance of the spoon. Miniature copies are often used as wedding favours. They can be carved with dates and names and symbols of love such as a hearts, bells, vines, key holes, anchors and knots.

Wedding favours can also be suitable to eat. There are a lot of options available for couples who wish to give their guests some kind of edible favour. You can have many things personalized these days. Some firms specialize in personalized presents, which can also be given as wedding favours. Some examples of edible, personalized wedding favours might be: chocolate bars, mints, biscuits or gourmet chocolates. The box or wrapper could carry your photo or / and your names and the date.

Miniature wedding cakes are another idea for edible wedding favours. Miniature wedding cakes have a short shelf life so they will have to include a warning, which will in all probability be put on the wrapper automatically, but it is worth checking.

A half / quarter or small bottle of wine or other drink would also be fairly easy to arrange as wine bottle labels can be bought in any home brew shop.

Picture frames are frequent wedding favors. You could give a picture frame and follow it up with a photo of the beneficiary of the frame enjoying your wedding party. This might be expensive and tricky to set up as you will have to keep records of who has been photographed and who has not. It would be terrible to miss someone out, would it not? You will probably also need a professional photographer or at least a dedicated amateur.

Wedding favours can be anything really, but I reckon that they are better if they are practical. We gave very unusual bottle-openers away at our wedding. They had a pattern of a couple getting married, our names and the date. They also had a magnet in them to catch the bottle top as it came off. I have seen dozens of our bottle-openers stuck on our guests’ fridges over the years and the wedding was three years ago.

Boarding Dogs In Kennels

February 23rd, 2010

Are you the type of dog owner who likes to take your companion with you wherever you go? If you are then you know that that there are occasions when you can do this, but there are also times when you can not, for whatever reason.

On the occasions when that happens, you will usually need to find a boarding kennels that will take care of your dog while you are away.

A vacation is a time for relaxing, so you do not want to be worrying about your dog, if you can help it. Within your own country, it is not usually a big problem, but if you go abroad, then taking your dog can be more trouble than it is worth. Not only for you, but for your doggy friend as well.

If you can not place your dog with someone it knows, like a member of your family or a neighbour, then the only option is a boarding kennels.

I have placed my dog in a bad kennel once and I learned a few lessons from that. I placed my Becky in a kennel in a respectable village just outside our town. I was happy with what I saw and the sales pitch of the owner, so I went to Spain, thinking that all was fine for both of us. I had a great holiday and went straight to the kennels from the airport on my return, although I had told them a fortnight before that I would pick Becky up the day after my arrival. I just could not wait to see her.

I went to the kennels and they were surprised to see me. Of course, I was a day early. They said that Becky was ‘resting’ and that it would be better to ‘come back tomorrow’. No way! So they took me to see her. I nearly cried. She was sitting in a good sized cage, but on newspaper sodden with pee.

She saw me and just looked down at her paws. I called her name again, but she did not want to know. I paid the bill and put her in the car on the front passenger seat where she always sat. She just looked out the window and showed no interest in me whatsoever.

It was three days before she would speak to me again! The moral of this story is not to be impressed by big adverts or impressive locations as I was. Ask your dog-owning friends, write into the local paper inviting recommendations, phone the local animal protection society or the kennel club or look on the Internet.

Vacation Rental Homes, Are They Safe?

February 17th, 2010

Many people that go on vacation prefer to rent a home in their destination rather than staying in a hotel. Most of these people do this because it gives them the freedom to cook their own food and eat out when they like without missing set meals that they have already paid for.

It can be more difficult to find such a vacation rental than just booking a hotel reservation. However, most holiday makers say that the endeavor is worthwhile. There are a few points that you should check up on if you are not to be disappointed when you get there.

It is very handy if you have friends or family living in the destination locale and if you do have this advantage, you should use it, but all is far from lost if you do not. There are often agencies for these types of vacation rentals as many people who live in such locations rent their homes out in the peak season and they do this through those agencies.

There are also quite a few web sites specializing in home rentals for holiday purposes. Some of these Internet agencies just charge on behalf of the property owner and others can arrange swaps, which is a great, low-priced way to travel the world.

The surveys that these web sites carry out are often quite comprehensive, containing such predictable details as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but also such information as whether there is a phone, a car, bicycles or scooters on the property, along with distance to the shops, main road, airport, train and bus stations.

However, if you have any questions still unanswered, you are usually encouraged to ask them directly to the property owner via the agency’s web site. It is a good idea to rent a vacation home through a rental agency for security purposes, because if a problem does arise then you have a mediator on hand. In these situations the agency would handle the whole affair, up to the point of criminal proceedings.

You may also like to ask about the age of the property, because often the day to day repairs of the place is down to you while you are there, as are breakages, unless those things are covered by the owner’s insurance policy.

You should also find out whether you are allowed to make use of the home owner’s bedding, linen, and towels etc.. Often you just treat the house and its contents as your own, unles a cupboard or door is locked and you have not been given a key.

One last piece of advice is to get suitable directions. Places that you are not familiar will look very different in the dark than they do in the daylight, particularly if the property is off the beaten track.

Therefore, if you are expecting to arrive late or if there is a likelihood that you might be delayed, ask for photographs of key points taken in the twighlight. It will ensure that you get to your destination vacation home rental with no problems.

Are you a Divorced Dad? Dating for Single Dads is Easy!

February 17th, 2010

Can a separated Dad be a great father? Sure, but maybe a divorced man should also ask Why are you saying that? Just because you’re not divorced, it does not mean that you are a great father. It’s really such a pity that our society considers someone as a dead beat parent just because he’s divorced. There are a lot of fantastic divorced fathers out there and you can learn a lot from them.

Keeping It Close. You’ve got to admit that children suffer a lot from the consequences of divorce. From irate parents, to separation anxiety, it’s a tough world out there for children whose parents are divorced or getting divorced.

Appearing to carry on as normal for the children require sacrifice. Usually, both mother and father have to be able to set aside their differences long enough to inspect the damage that they have both done to their children. More often than not though, parents get so engrossed with their emotional grief, that they fail to notice that their children are suffering even more than they are.

If you are a single parent this is not easy. Dating for dads and dating for mothers is the only answer – don’t rush into things, but children need two parents and when you’re ready, you should get, and will find, another partner.

Studies show that when two parents make a conscious effort to stay close to each other, then they have more successful and stable children. What more do you need to know? Kids need two parents. Never think that dating for single dads is out of the question. In fact, it is important for the kids. You know that it is, don’t you?

Study: To make the importance of a father being close to his children more obvious, the State University of Arizona conducted a study of college students whose parents were divorced. The researchers observed personality, emotional and mental maturity, health, and even interest in school and success. The researchers found evidence that supports the idea that whichever parent had primary custody, it is certain that children need access to adults of both sexes. Widow(er)s need to get back into society for the sake of their children and the, selves.

Findings: The findings are very interesting. Statistics clearly shows that children whose parents are divorced have healthier and more mature relationships than their parents and make a conscious effort of keeping the essence of family intact.

61% of the children involved in the study asserted that their mum or whoever had primary custodianship moved them at least an hour’s drive away from the other parent. One of the concerns expressed by the students was getting caught in the crossfire. Also, when they stayed with one parent, future financial help (like for school or college) lessened. For example, if they stayed with Dad, Mum gave less when college came, and vice versa. So, the fact is that the 1 hour’s distance already had a negative effect on the children.

Emotional upheaval cannot really be prevented, but a closer inspection of the children showed that those whose parents stayed close to them had a better emotional disposition and a better mentally.

In Conclusion: All in all the study asserts that divorce does affect children. The way the parents treat each other and the distance they live from their children does have a significant impact that could determine whether the child succeeds or not. It is difficult to make friends with an ex wife after all that’s been said and done, but it will be more difficult for you as a divorced dad when in the future you see your children suffer the consequences of what you did.

As a single Dad, it is really up to you. You owe it to yourself and to your children to make first step to keeping close to your children.

Divorced men are in high demand, so if you want to know who’s looking for you in your town, please go to our web site http://dating.the-real-way.com

The Zodiacal Signs Of Love

February 10th, 2010

Many people think that the stars can supply a lot of knowledge about ourselves, our past and our future. This information can include how, when, and with whom we are most liable to fall in love, although it can go a lot further than that too. This is not to say that astrology is the same as a chart of your destiny, so although the one you love may not be a textbook match for you in astrological terms, it does not mean that you should not start a relationship.

There are a few methods by which you can start to understand the universal forces that draw someone to their partner or anyone else. If you learn to interpret or even master these forces, you will also gain knowledge of how to make any liaison work better and discover yourself at the same time as well.

One of the best ways to start, is to find a horoscope of yourself that appears pretty accurate. In this way you will discover a writer of horoscopes that you can trust. Not everyone is at the same level of advancement and this goes for horoscope writers too. Some are novices some are experts, most are in the middle and some are con artists.

Once you have your own fairly accurate horoscope, get one done by the same person for the one you love or would like to get on with better. Try not to read too much into what you think you know until you know that you know it. For example, you might be a Capricorn (a ram), so it might sound logical to be weary of a Leo (a lion) as the two animals are enemies in real life. But learn more; do not jump to conclusions.

You can start to compare the two zodiac signs for complementary and contrasting qualities, likes and dislikes though. You can go into as much depth of detail about the ideal zodiac mate for you as you want. However, be very suspicious of letting the zodiac reading rule your life and decision-making. Do not give up on someone just because their horoscope appears to conflict with yours. Rather, use the information you read about the other person to connect better with them.

There really are rather a lot of very informative books and web sites to help you on your mission to figure out the details of your zodiac match. So do some research and have some fun with it. However, be prepared to unearth a few surprises. You will probably find that the author of the book or web site is closer to understanding you by your zodiac sign than you would ever have assumed, which means that the author is probably fairly accurate with your partner too.

Once you have been studying the zodiac for a time, you will look at people differently and you will be very curious about other peoples’ star signs. You will want to know whether you can deduce a person’s sign of the zodiac and whether you can predict his or her reactions.

Should You be Anxious about Anxiety Depression?

February 5th, 2010

Many people who burn the candle at both ends exhaust not only their physical strength, but they also tend to over extend their mental powers to the point where they plainly need some old fashioned relaxation.

Many busy people who are unable to fathom the idea of relaxing and taking time of from work, as well as from their worries, have nervous breakdowns, anxiety depression and all sorts of mental illnesses that cause a person’s sanity to go haywire. Fortunately, if you are one of those who is unable to relax and who is constantly worried and fussing over things, there are various cures and treatments available for dealing with anxiety depression.

Anxiety depression is actually characterized by all sorts of irregular behaviour and erratic moods in the person suffering from it. This is usually because of specific stress triggers. Also, many people who tend to get easily worked up over stressful activities are actually prone to having anxiety depression. It is actually a matter of being strong-willed when it comes to facing difficult and stress-prone activities. It may be pretty hard to do at first, but trying to be calm and cool in times of extreme pressure is what will actually save your mental health from going into a downward spiral.

When it comes to effectively curing oneself of a mental illness, one must keep in mind that one has to be honest with oneself and assess what kind of depression or mental illness one actually has. Go to a reputable psychiatrist to get yourself diagnosed correctly as well to get the right depression treatment. Here are the various types of depression:

Manic or Bipolar depression – characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one’s mood where one minute the sufferer is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute (day or week) the sufferer is in a private hell.

Postpartum depression – is recognizable by long periods of depression and a feeling of emptiness in a new mother where physical stress during child birth and / or an undefined sense of responsibility towards the new born child are just some of the many reasons why some new mothers go through this illness.

Dysthimia – is recognizable by a slight resemblance to bipolar (manic) depression. In this case, however, it has been proven to be much less severe, although, doctors say that, any case of depression should be treated as soon as possile.

Cyclothemia – is recognizable by a similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the person suffering from this mental illness can occasionally suffer from severe mood swings.

Seasonal Affective Disorder – characterized by falling into a rut only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall). Studies, however, prove that more people become depressed during the Winter and Fall seasons and lastly, mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in just a short period of time.

But the type of depression that has actually been proven to be most common among people is anxiety depression, which is actually characterized by the state of being overly anxious about things. Anxiety is a normal behaviour that’ll actually help a person cope more with certain stressful activities like a first date or a gruelling exam the following day. Anxiety actually helps you get psyched up towards facing certain “difficult situations”; anxiety therefore is actually a good thing.

Anxiety depression however, is just the opposite. However, it should not be lightly dismissed as a “case of the jitters”. Anxiety depression is in fact an illness that can be caused by the actual biological DNA of an individual, or in other words, it can be an hereditary illness.

Furthermore, there are actually several types of anxiety depression too. Each type has its own unique characteristics. Take for instance Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD. This kind of anxiety depression is a lot more complicated than the average anxiety depression, despite it possibly being a daily problem for those who suffer from this anxiety depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder actually makes the individual a lot more paranoid than normal. Anxiety attacks are much more frequent, even absurdly so at times.

Suffers can get anxious even when there is no apparent reason that calls for them to behave in such a way. Those people suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder often show a lot of symptoms varying from from lack of sleep, to being unable to relax, becoming tired easily, inability to concentrate and suffering from depression. This kind of anxiety depression is still curable though.

Consult a reputable cognitive behavioural therapist who will give you the therapy that you need to help you loosen up. Furthermore, prescribed medicines are a must to help these individuals battle anxiety attacks, help them calm down and help them relax.

Welsh Terriers

February 2nd, 2010

Initially, Welsh terriers were bred for hunting rabbits, foxes and badgers, but public opinion and the decline in the lust for blood in general have gone against blood sports and so this native breed of Wales has become a show dog and a pet. Breeders attempt to outdo each other by breeding the Welsh terrier to have a denser wiry coat and deeper colouration. The Welsh terrier is also a popular pet because it is one of the most easy-going terriers.

The Welsh terrier is a fun loving dog. It just loves to run, chase and play, which makes it a tremendous companion and a perfect pet. Welsh terriers need lots of exercise, so be prepared for plenty of walking, if you make your mind up to get one.

It is a good idea to ’socialize’ your dog as early as possible. This means that you should introduce your Welsh terrier puppy to children and other dogs at an early age. The more you encourage your dog to play with other dogs as a puppy, the less trouble you will have with your dog fighting or barking at other dogs and cats. It’s the same story with children. Children can play very roughly, and a dog could be forgiven for biting back, but it can be avoided by introducing your Welsh terrier puppy to children while it is still young. The child might learn respect, but the dog will learn tolerance.

The Welsh terrier is easily trained, if you like your dog to perform tricks. it is an intelligent breed and, being former hunters, they are good at learning commands and tricks. Train your Welsh terrier with kindheartedness and reiteration. They like to retrieve sticks and play with a ball. Many people train their Welsh terriers to catch a flying Frisbee too.

A Welsh terrier will groom himself quite meticulously, but you can help out by brushing him once a week in order to eradicate the dead and loose hair. This will also help reduce the amount of hairs dropping inside your house, although terriers in general, and wire-haired dogs in particular do not shed as much hair as soft coated dogs. You could also lend a hand by wiping him over with a moist cloth from time to time in order to pick up any dust on his coat.

A Welsh terrier is very active and very curious, so it is prudent to keep your dog in a yard that has been fenced off. However, the fence needs to be realistically high, because the Welsh terrier has an exceptional ability to jump due to its long legs.

The Welsh terrier is Britain’s oldest breed of dog, but it is now under pressure. The British kennel club registers only 300 Welsh terrier puppies per year, whereas it registers tens of thousands of puppies of other, more fashionable, breeds. The Welsh terrier is a strong-willed animal, so it does need a strong-willed and patient owner.

However. if you want a Welsh terrier and you persevere with it, you will never look back. They have a lot to give and, as with so many things in life, you only get out what you are willing to put in.

International And Inter-racial Dating

January 19th, 2010

This article is about my experiences of international and inter-racial dating. It is purely an account of what I have seen and experienced myself over the course of my life so far, although at 55 years old, I am nearer the end of it than the beginning. It is my guidance on handling an international or inter-racial relationship.

It all began at an early age when I was in infant school at seven. There was a Filipina girl in our class and I could not take my eyes off her, although I probably did not know much about it then. We parted at eight when they moved closer to another school and I never saw her again.

My next meeting with a foreign girl, was the mademoiselle junior teacher at school and I was convinced that I would marry a French country girl when I grew up. That passed when the German assistant arrived.

When I was fourteen, I went on a school cruise to Leningrad and there was a group of exchange students going home to Sweden on the same ship. I went out with one of them for roughly a week and first realized the problems that can come from international dating. There was a minor language barrier, but it was fun getting over that. The real difficulty came, because I had predetermined ideas of what Swedish girls were like, most likely instilled in me after years of silly ‘Carry On’ films.

At sixteen, I went to Germany to work for the summer and I found it very easy to get on with the German girls, although they were shyer that I was expecting too. Also an outlook I owed to silly Health and Efficiency ’sex films’.

After concluding university, I moved to The Netherlands to live. It was the seventies and Dutch girls were great. However, I made friends with male British colleagues first and soon saw some of the problems that can come from an international relationship. Most of the men I knew were typical Brits and made absolutely no effort to learn Dutch at all. Surprisingly, many Dutch people could not speak English either, particularly the parents.

This lead to a surprising quantity of tense moments in a week and that put a lot of strain on my friends’ relationships. It is so easy to start name-calling when you are angry and it is the worst thing you can do. The Dutch girlfriend or her parents or friends would be called ‘a stupid cheese eater’ or something just as daft and the relationship was over or in trouble for days. I do not remember what the Dutch called us.

I vowed to myself there and then never to get serious about a foreign girl because the arguments were just too much. Food was never a problem. Culture was not much of a problem, although where I was in southern Netherlands, most people were Catholic and I am not. This did perplex some parents but not me. Travelling was always going to be the drawback. Do you live by her parents or yours? Especially when children start arriving. Most countries have stronger family ties than Britain.

Then, at 50, having never been married, I went to Thailand, where I met my wife-to-be. Asian culture is very different from British or even European society and it is a real shock to both parties. Anyway, five years into our relationship and we are still fine. I recollect the reasons I gave myself for not marrying abroad when in The Netherlands and I was wrong, but not much.

If you are going to enter into an international or even inter-racial relationship, you had better learn how to control your anger. It is the most important advice you will ever get. Being understanding of other points of view is important too, but not getting angry is more important. Furthermore, you must try to learn something about your partner’s land, background and language, otherwise you cannot join in any discussion your partner may have with someone who does know a bit about it.

I have never seen religion be a problem ever, except in an argument. My wife is Buddhist and I am not. We talk about it, but there is never any stress. Food, again I have never seen a problem in this field. Clothing, again no problem in my life. If you get into an international or inter-racial relationship, keep your temper, do not shout, do not get angry and talk things out calmly.

Anger Management Resources

January 18th, 2010

Because anger management is a huge problem in society today, there have been many programs developed, books written, Internet websites created and anger management movies filmed. Even though all of this help is in place and accessible to anyone, not all people with anger issues can benefit from the same type of resource. Some people get help attending an anger management programme – it may be effective and cause major changes in their characteristics.

Being able to steal away alone with a book can be helpful to some people with anger management issues. Seeing their problems in print and being able to sift through them in their head might be one of the great anger management resources. The Internet is a fantastic resource regarding anger management and some people may find it helpful to view the different websites and read stories about individuals with anger management issues. However, for many people who have difficulties controlling their anger, watching an anger management film might be what is needed to break them out of their behaviour of angry, emotional outbursts.

Watching an anger management movie would give the individual the chance to see, with their own eyes and hear with their own ears, just what anger does to a person and those around them. An anger management movie should give examples and situations where individuals act on their anger. The film may apply exactly to an individual’s current circumstance. It may hit home – so to speak. Watching the actors play out their life stories and their behaviour may be an eye-opener. It may take watching a husband abuse a child or wife, a mother screaming at her kid, a child hitting another child, to realize that anger is a significant problem to them.

When an angry person is in that frame of mind- ie really angry, he is likely to blame it on whoever gets in the way. But being an actor in his own picture, he is incapable of watching his own performance. However, if they given the opportunity of seeing it on the big screen, he might be surprised and even devastated by his actions. Watching an anger management film would probably be like watching yourself in a similar situation. This may be the method that works best for some people.

An anger management movie will not only give illustrations of the actual situations involving anger. The movie will likely provide information regarding anger management techniques. Using these techniques and the characters in the movie, it is likely that there would be scenes of people being introduced to anger management techniques and programmes.

The film would explain the steps to dealing with anger and frustration issues. This type of anger management movie might be the answer to many people’s problems. It would seem a good idea if the anger management movie showed the person, in the same situation as the sufferer, change from the first scene in the film to the last scene. Showing how the individual was able to receive help through anger management and turn his life around, could just be the incentive he needed.

There is no doubt that, there are all sorts of anger management film available in the shops. The Internet is also a great source of information regarding anger management and anger management resources such as books and anger management films. If you think you or someone you know would benefit from watching an anger management movie, it would be a wise idea to get your hands on one.
